What is Functional Medicine?
Functional Medicine is an exciting, emerging field of medicine that focuses on the detection and correction of nutritional deficiencies and cellular toxicities. Its purpose is to implement a personalized method of medicine that revolves around a root cause treatment plan in contrast to managing symptoms. Rather than addressing the surface-level ailments by prescribing “a pill for every ill,” it seeks to target the question, “Why are you ill?”
Functional Medicine practitioners will inquire about your daily life to take note of possible contributing factors to your illness such as sleep, exercise, nutrition, stress, and environment.
By taking these factors into consideration, our Functional Medicine practitioner, Dr. Robert White, will help you take charge of your health using a holistic approach that includes nutrition and lifestyle modifications, as well as supplements when appropriate.
Dietary Pattern
Back to the basics but often ignored, FM emphasizes proper nutritional care. Instead of suggesting tablets and pills firsthand, the patients are asked to consume healthy dietary foods. So, advanced nutritional correction is used, which includes the amount of intake for useful nutrients and minerals, particularly vitamins, potassium, sodium, iron, etc., for patients’ well-being.
Stress Managment
Most health challenges cannot be fully addressed unless methods to alleviate stress are actively pursued. For example, meditation and acupressure techniques are often suggested to release stress and address mental disorders, including anxiety, hypertension, and other issues.
Functional Medicine is WHOLE BODY Medicine.
Another difference is that conventional wisdom separates the body into smaller and smaller parts, without emphasizing the interconnections of those parts. For example, the branch of medicine known as cardiology deals with diseases or abnormalities of the heart, neurology deals with the anatomy, function, and disorders of the nervous system, and endocrinology deals with the hormones in your body.
These systems and disorders are generally addressed separately. There is no greater proof of this than looking at the specialists who take care of these issues. For example, if you are diagnosed with problems (or if your primary care physician even suspected problems) with your heart, your nerves, or your hormones, chances are that you would be referred to three different specialists.
That would naturally be a cardiologist, a neurologist, and an endocrinologist. However, the truth is that your body is one integrated, organized, and whole system. Functional medicine breaks apart the artificial division of the human body into separate, disconnected parts; solutions focus on whole-body healing.
